Blackheads result when the pores on the skin become blocked with oil or dead skin. The color black is produced by oxidation (open pore) when in contact with air. If the pore is closed is called whitehead.

There is a popular belief that blackheads are form because of lack of hygiene and although it will help to keep your face clean it is not the main reason.

Oily skin is more prone to develop blackheads because of the excess oil that it produces.

Note: There is some controversy as to whether is good to use charcoal masks (peel off type) to get rid of blackheads. Some experts agree that this type of masks are too strong to use on the face because they remove the top layer of the skin and can create scarring. DIY peel off charcoal masks are very popular but dangerous to use as they contain glue which can create havoc on the skin.

Ultimately is up to the individual to decide whether to use them or not but at least make sure that you are well informed before making any decision. If you want to read the article click here.
