Microdermabrasion works as a superficial treatment in which a device attached to a machine "sandblast" the skin with tiny aluminum oxide crystals. The process begins exfoliating the dead cells of the skin.

Once this step is done the dead cells are vacuumed to remove them from the skin's surface.

The theory behind is that it stimulates collagen production, thickening the skin and improving the skin's appearance.

What Is Microdermabrasion? Benefits & Skin Care Uses

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive facial treatment mostly used to remove the top layers of the skin. Depending on the system used and the intensity, the results will vary.

I personally love the treatment and use it when I want to achieve a healthier and glowing look.

It is a very popular procedure used to treat skin conditions such as:

  • Fine lines
  • Sun damage
  • Superficial uneven pigmentation
  • Acne scars
  • Stretch marks
  • Blocked pores

The treatment usually takes up to 45 minutes and more treatments are recommended for best results (a series of six, once a week).

This procedure can be quite uncomfortable and you are going to feel a stinging sensation that depending on the intensity of the device can go from moderate to strong. Your face will be red for a while and even more if your skin is sensitive.

You must wear sunscreen with high SPF every day, to protect your skin after the treatment.

2. Olay Regenerist Microdermabrasion & Peel System Review

The Olay Regenerist might be a drugstore brand but is a high-end system. It aims to effectively resurface skin texture by sloughing away dead cells on facial surfaces.

At the same time, it promotes new cell generation. It works with two steps, a microdermabrasion gel and peel activator serum.

Although it won't give you salon results this kit is very handy when you want instant results but don't have the time to use a microdermabrasion home device. Is great if you want to get rid of impurities and give your skin a healthy glow.

Let's see how to use this kit:

  1. The first step is applying the gel that contains derma-crystals. The gel will exfoliate dead skin cells thanks to the baking soda and exfoliating crystals. Massage this into your face/neck and wait for a minute.
  2. In step two you use the peel activator on top of the gel. The combination causes a foaming action with a warm sensation that flushes your face. Massage this foam for a minute during which the chemical exfoliation occurs. Rinse your face with cool water, pat dry and use a good moisturizing lotion. You will experience a brighter, softer and smoother skin when using it twice a week.
  3. Please always read and follow the instructions carefully.

Pros

  • Much more affordable than chemical peels and microdermabrasion treatments
  • Home treatment product, use it at home at your own convenience
  • Skin is visibly firmer, more radiant and smoother after a few weeks of regular use
  • All-over body use
  • Lightening skin
  • Prevents early lines and wrinkles
  • Removes minor imperfections and superficial scarring
  • Convenient portable carry case

Cons

  • Face can become red after use
  • It can make your skin drier which is a pro for those with oily skin problems
  • Sensitive skin should be extra careful to avoid a burning sensation

Good to Know

1. How often should you use this product?

The manufacturer recommends to use it no more than 2 times per week and in non-consecutive days. Make sure that if your skin is sensitive you don't overuse the peel. Don't forget the sunscreen, must be used every day.

2. What type of skin is more suited to?

All types of skin really, but sensitive skin should take more care when using it.  If your skin is sensitive start by using it once a week and be gentle when rubbing the cream.

Also recommended for all ages, from young to mature skin and every age in between.

2. What is Olay Regenerist peel for? (exactly)

This is a good exfoliator/peel with the following benefits:

  • It will be silk/smooth to the touch
  • It can also make pores less obvious

  • It could improve some acne symptoms but it won't get rid of it completely
  • No really that great to get rid of pigmentation

This product is good when you do not want to use machines and equipment to get rid of dead skin cells. It is an exfoliating treatment with salicylic acid to reduce the appearance of enlarged pores, acne scars and minor imperfections.

It remains a gentle exfoliator even with salicylic acid as a major ingredient.

Useful Tips & Information

1. What is the best way to use the crystals?

  • You can use the crystals just by adding water but it could also be added to your usual body lotion or face cleanser. Just add few crystals into a container and mix it with your chosen lotion. Stir or shake well and voila, ready to use.
  • I find that the fastest way to use them as a exfoliator for the whole body is when having a shower. Just make sure your skin is wet and mix it with your usual shower gel. Rub gently and rinse with warm water.
  • For the face the simplest way to use them is by placing few crystals in the palm of your hand and make a paste with water.

2. Can I use the crystals using a skin care brush?

I haven't use them with any device but some people use them with a facial brush. You will use the same steps, mixing with a cleanser, and then using the facial brush for 1 or 2 minutes, to potentiate the exfoliating properties.

3. What is the amount I should be using for a single time?

It is recommended to use a teaspoon of crystals with 2 tablespoons of water, lotion, oil or gel.

4. What these crystals are good for?

With regular use (2 times per week) it will help you reduce blocked pores and blackheads, brown spots, flaky skin, fine lines, dry skin , dull skin, acne scars and blemishes.

5. Can you use the crystals on your lips?

Yes you can. Mix them just with water, oil or your usual cleanser and gently rub the lip area (3 to 5 minutes). Remove using warm water. Good to get rid of flaky, dry skin and temporarily plump your lips.

5.  Beauty Star 3 in 1 Portable Diamond Machine Review

This at home microdermabrasion machine is another non-surgical procedure that rids your face from outer skin layers, sucking out dead particles. It effectively removes imperfections, skin debris, unwanted pigmentation, reduces wrinkles and fine lines.

When you use it moderately along with penetrating skin products, it promotes skin health, restores cell activity and replenishes natural nutrients. (For instructions on how to set up this machine check the video below)

This machine uses diamond heads to peel your dead skin cells, followed by gentle suctioning/vacuuming that removes dirt and particles from your face. It is advised that you start at its lowest setting even though it does not offer higher than -0-55cmHg suction power.

Pros:

  • Suitable for use on all parts of the body except eye and genital area
  • Two in one action, removing dead cells and vacuuming

Cons:

  • Not suitable for use with lotions that has an oil base (removal from your skin will be difficult)
  • Some find the crystals too fine and prefer a grittier product
  • Some users find that the suction function is not strong enough
Use Beauty Star 3 in 1 microdermabrasion machine to get rid of blemishes, acne & pigmentation

I have added a video below because many people complain about the lack of instructions to set up this microdermabrasion machine. Although in Spanish is pretty self-explanatory and the instructions are easy to follow.

8 Popular Skin Microdermabrasion Question & Answers

Best at home microdermabrasion tools, products and machines to get rid of common skin care problems. Check these reviews to help you decide which one is better for your needs.Microdermabrasion at home for acne scars, stretch marks, pigmentation, pores and fine lines

Microdermabrasion, a non-invasive facial treatment, has taken the world by storm. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, about 900,000 Americans underwent the 30-minute procedure back in 2009. Imagine how many do so today.

The facial uses a fine crystal spray or diamond tip to scrape off dead skin cells, which a vacuum removes. Because of its popularity, questions about the treatment abound. Eight of the most common are answered below.

How Microdermabrasion WorksDoes microdermabrasion remove blackheads?

1. Is Microdermabrasion Safe for Sensitive Skin?

Yes, it is, but sensitive skin which is both thin and dry - poses two challenges. The first is over-exfoliation. Therapists must apply less pressure and use less time than normal during the facial.

Or  else, they remove too much skin, causing irritation or broken capillaries. After the procedure, over-exfoliation also occurs if you use anti-aging serums, synthetic peels, or products containing glycolic acid near treated skin.

The second challenge is chemical irritation. Some people react to the sulfates and petroleum products contained in the scrub used during the treatment. In such cases, therapists use natural-base scrubs and a diamond-tipped wand.

2. Is Microdermabrasion Good for Aging Skin?

Yes, the facial has no age limit. In fact, seniors and middle-aged people benefit from it, perhaps more than do their younger counterparts. According to a University of Michigan report, the procedure reduces wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, normal scars, and acne scars in aging skin.

The report also states that when practitioners use diamond-tipped wands in the facial, the skin produces collagen. This protein then rejuvenates the skin and changes the skin’s appearance.

However, the report found three minor issues. One, when practitioners use aluminum oxide, the skin may or may not produce collagen. Two, you need several procedures to get rid of scars. And three, whether age spots disappear varies with each individual.

3. Does It Work for Acne?

Although it is good for acne, it works best with mild acne scars and non-inflamed acne. Remember, the procedure peels off the fine layer of dirt and dead cells lying on your skin before sucking it up. This works well if you have the acne mentioned above.

So after only a few facials, you will see positive results. However, exfoliation and suction alone never get to deep-pitted acne. Even repeated treatments yield minimal results. To get rid of such acne, combine the facial with further procedures, such as laser resurfacing, punch excision, and subcision.

Finally, avoid this treatment if you have inflamed acne or if you recently used acne drugs like retinoids to avoid an acne breakout.

4. Is Microdermabrasion Good for Black Skin?

The procedure works for all skin types, but black skin needs extra caution. Although people consider black skin less sensitive than white skin, it is, in fact, the more sensitive of the two.

The melanocytes causing the dark pigmentation react violently to UV rays, stress, pollution, and chemicals. And when they do, they leave the skin irritated or, even worse, permanently discolored.

To prevent either of the two from happening, practitioners first test the skin for hyper-pigmentation and the likelihood of getting discolored. Only then do they give you the facial. But even then, they apply the least pressure and use the lowest-wand speed possible.

5. Is Microdermabrasion Good for Large Pores?

Pores enlarge because of too much oil in the skin, sun damage, poor skin hygiene, genetics and aging. This treatment is effective in unclogging pores but it won't make them smaller or change its size. So if this is the only reason for using this treatment you will be better applying topical products containing vitamin A and salicylic or glycolic acids.

6. It Is Good for Oily Skin?

If it is good enough for enlarged pores and blackheads, it is good for oily skin. As mentioned above, both form when the skin produces too much oil among other things.

7. Does It Remove Blackheads?

Blackheads form when dirt clogs these enlarged pores. Sometimes they form because of improper  exfoliation where the dead cells turn into plugs and fill up with oil.

This skin treatment won't make a great difference to blackheads. It could eliminate blackheads that are in the surface but it won't get rid of deeper ones. The best treatments to clear blackheads are lasers such as Intense Pulsed Light.  IPL will also get rid of birthmarks and skin pigmentation. Another effective method for getting rid of blackheads is glycolic acid peels.

Topical treatments that you could try to remove blackheads are retinoids such as vitamin A and alpha hydroxy acids. You could also try a facial at the beauty salon where extractions are performed by a professional but be aware that this is only temporary as blackheads will form again.

8. Does Home Microdermabrasion Work?

Yes, it does. If you have the money, buy a home  microdermabrasion machine and exfoliate your skin, but first ensure that you know how to do it properly.

What if you have no money, or you want to save a buck or two? Then buy an exfoliation cloth, peel, serum, or scrub and manually but gently scrub your skin. Is not the same but is the next best thing.

Or, use your own DIY remedies. For instance, use a lotion containing lactic acid instead of your usual one. Only keep the acidity below 5% for sensitive skin.

When all else fails, jump  into a shower, and scrub away the dead cells from your body using a loofah. After the shower, use a homemade salt or sugar scrub.

Bottom Line

This facial treatment is more suited to those looking to diminish fine lines, reduce light brown spots and restore a healthy glow.

It also treats skin affected by acne, clogged pores, and too much oiliness. What’s more, home facial treatments work too and will save you lots of money in professional treatments.

A Final Note

I once had a series of crystal clear treatments and although my skin looked better I didn't have the improvement I was looking for. For that reason is very important to match your expectations with the results the treatment is offering.

Personally, I think it works better for reducing acne scars and brightening dull skin but no that good for getting rid of deep wrinkles (it works better on fine lines).

Make sure to pick a good qualified physician who will understand what you want to achieve. You can also ask to see photos of people who have had this facial treatment before.
